There is an interview with Tord Boontje about the new designs he has been doing for Target’s Christmas stuff.

I like what he Boontje’s says of the design process:

What is your favorite part of the design process and why?
The very beginning, before things get complicated by reality, and then the end where we managed to overcome reality and make a fantasy come true.

Ah so true. It is easy to dream up all these ideas but the execution is difficult, although can be rewarding in its own right. For the most part I think I am still trying to overcome reality. Or maybe I change my mind too much about what the actual outcome should be. The process of creation often makes us take different paths. There are definately works that I know have not reached the full original fantasy, yet I leave them and move on for varying reasons. Sometimes its a matter of materials. I would very much like it if my div three clothing designs were remade with very specific nylon fabrics and colors. And perhaps some pattern tweeks, but I have not encountered nylon in the exact shades I would like and it would be an expensive undertaking for a project no longer holds my fascination.

An art history professor once told me that making art is always about the future because it is always about what is next for you and your work. Still I am sure there is a point where you can say, dammit a million cups of coffee, hundreds of hours, 6 fabulous studio assistants later and that really is exactly what I had in mind.

I am looking forward to looking at Boontje’s Target work. Maybe I’ll pick up a thing or two.

Also in high-end designer collaborations with mass retailers news: one of my top ten favorite fashion designers Viktor&Rolf have created a line for H&M and I am very excited. I took a look at some of the sneak peak stuff on the H&M website and it looks promising. The collection debuts nov. 9.
